Message:
I stopped posting over one month ago so as to not contribute to a negative environment
surrounding the 2010 recruiting effort. I am still waiting for my attaboy from Hawk. A lot
has happened since Nebraska week. We fired the coach, we unfired the coach, and Hawk
said that he had inherited a program that had been burned to the ground. It was this
comment that has me boycotting the athletic department, at least until Hawk is replaced
by someone that actually understands football. When I posted some three months ago that
Hawk was on limited talking terms with one of our coaches, my post was quickly erased. I
will not use names. But suffice it to say, this coaching staff is not totally on the same page.
Far from it. The decision to start Cody was solely the head coaches call. And it had the
ripple effect that most of us expected.
Hawk knows that he is on borrowed time. If there was any doubt, the Smoker Thursday
night at Cherry Hills Country Club certainly helped Hawk to realize he is not revered in this
region. First question out of the box was why Riddle was still on the staff. It was not a
softball question, but delivered about as hard as it could be delivered. The next question
was Hawk's reaction to the fact that the attendance in 2008 was 1,700, about 750 in
2009, and less than 400 in 2010. Hawk replied that he can not be concerned with off-the
-field issues. Huh? Hawk did not have the coattails of Coach Mac to carry the day, like he
did at the luncheon. Most every question was direct and to the point. He did not have
Larry Zimmer to ferret out the tough questions. It was a long night.
The biggest murmur occurred when the question was poised as to how it was possible
that not one Coloradoan from the top ten had been signed. This was a tough crowd.
The recruiting results can be spun for all it is worth, and we do welcome those young men
that chose to attend CU. But come on, our results vis-a-vis the rest of the Big 12 was not
impressive. The record speaks for itself. Recruits want to be with a rising program, not one
that is headed south. Hawk needs to win and win impressively in 2010. If he doesn't,
someone else will be fielding questions at next year's Smoker. My biggest riddle is how
did Hawk not anticipate the negative ripple effect by starting Cody, when the entire team
expected Hansen to start.
